Approach & About
Through therapy, we can discover new parts of ourselves, challenge barriers that inhibit growth, and develop new skills to create our own paths to change. We as individuals hold these strengths within us already, but at times life can lead us to believe we are lacking. My hope is to help you discover (or even rediscover) those strengths!
My name is Therese Long and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Portland, Oregon. I believe the way to success in therapy is to find a therapist that is a good fit for your needs. Therapy, it self, is a relationship and one that works best when open, honest, and collaborative. I am invested in the client as an individual but also as a part of a greater system. I work from a systemic lens and believe deeply that our interactions and habits are greatly influenced by those around us and our previous experiences. My work with clients is done with the consideration of one’s identity, family history culture, and the world around us.
My style is direct yet gentle and I speak from an honest heart. I pull from various models but most often utilize Narrative Therapy, CBT, and mindfulness based techniques. Through a combination of these modalities, I work to help clients re-write unhealthy narratives and adjust patterns or ways of thinking that reinforce these inaccurate self-views. Through the use of mindfulness we can build the mind-body connection, help slow thinking down, and increase your awareness of thoughts, choices, and interactions. When appropriate or helpful, I may add some art therapy, experiential work, or even get you up and moving with some walking therapy! These techniques can be great alternatives to talk-therapy and effective channels to connecting to your inner needs. I have experience with a variety of clients and concerns. I provide family therapy, individual work, and couples therapy. This is a place to help you tap into your inner strength, listen to your needs, and build a stronger relationship with your self and those around you!
