Sarah Arp-Howard, LMFT
I work with individuals, couples and families. I will usually have a family therapy approach when working with younger children, but with adolescents and adults, we will often have a discussion about whether individual therapy or couple/family therapy is best suited for your needs.
Adolescence (both for the individual adolescent, ages 11-24, and their families)
Family Transitions (divorce, birth of a new generation, loss)
Educational Support (Managing ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Behavioral Concerns)

Approach & About
My focus is on the connections we have with others in our lives, and how these connections help and hinder our healing process. By helping you and your loved ones find more comfort and connection in your relationships, we are able to find lasting change for myriad problems that you might face, such as pervasive anxiety or depression, chronic conflict and discord, or healing from trauma.
Together, we will explore questions about your life that will help you find a greater sense of understanding and choice over how to relate to others, be it your child, your spouse, your teacher, your parent, or even yourself. For example, are there legacies in your family history that hold you back? Do you experience or internalize oppressive messages from dominant culture about your body or your value? Do you have underlying fears that keep you from reaching out towards others? Are there underlying assumptions in the patterns of interaction between you and your family members that cause conflict? Are there new boundaries that you could develop to help you find better functioning? What emotional experiences and responses drive your connections, and how can you communicate them towards a sense of healing?
These are big questions, and guided by a feminist, constructivist lens, and attachment and family systems theories, we will find new insights and interactions that will help you find relief and support. This kind of work is not usually brief, but does produce lasting change. To learn more about who I am and how I work, please visit my website at arphowardcounseling.com.
